CTL's Cleveland, Ohio office provided geotechnical engineering and construction testing services as Beaver Excavating Company and Cem-Base, Inc. implemented our soil modification plan on this challenging project.
Beaver and Cem-Base placed a 16-inch layer of soil modified with lime kiln dust (LKD) at an elevation of four feet below the foundation bearing elevation followed by eight feet of engineered fill to subgrade elevation.
The stiff modified layer bridged over very soft underlying soils to distribute the foundation stresses over a large area, thereby minimizing settlement. Due to extremely adverse weather conditions including the remnants of two hurricanes, Beaver and Cem-Base also used LKD to dry existing grades and borrow materials used for engineered fill before compaction. Beaver was able to complete the building pad before Wal-Mart's deadline.
