Additions to our Equipment Inventory...

Since our last installment, CTL has acquired two particularly exciting additions to our equipment inventory. Most recently, CTL added another drill rig to it’s fleet, totaling ten. The Geotechnical Department in Columbus, Ohio ordered a CME 55 tracked drill rig in April of 2005. It was delivered on January 17, 2006 then loaded up and on the job two days later. CTL currently has a fleet of 3 rubber tired ATV units, 3 Truck units and 1 Truck / Skid / Track unit.

The Construction Materials Laboratory has just purchased and taken delivery on a new Ground Penetrating Radar System from GSSI. GPR is used for non-destructive inspection of the earth and infrastructure. GPR was commercialized by GSSI in 1970 to find geologic features, water table, and ice thickness.

GPR now has many additional uses including evaluation of existing structures, locating buried utilities and underground storage tanks, and locating post tension cables and reinforcing in concrete. GPR uses pulsed EM waves similar to aircraft radar. What are seen are changes in electrical properties such as conductivity. Best seen are contrasts / reflections and metal targets reflect 100% of the signal.
Two things are measured, time to the target and back, and strength of the returned signal. With the aid of computers a grid type survey can produce a 3D image of the area scanned. CTL now owns all the hardware and software for scanning soil and construction materials.
