Notable Hospital Projects

Firelands Regional Medical Center – East Addition, Sandusky, Ohio

The Firelands Regional Medical Center Expansion Project includes over 500,000 square feet of new construction in 5 major phases (a 600-space parking garage; a 70,000 sf Professional Building and Powerhouse; a 182,000 sf East Addition patient tower; a 16,000 sf West Addition and a 10,500 sf Dietary Addition). The parking garage is precast concrete on spread foundations. The hospital buildings are structural steel on either spread foundations or drilled piers extending to bedrock.

CTL Engineering is providing testing and observation services and special inspections of the construction items including earthwork and site utilities, foundations, concrete and

reinforcing steel, structural steel, structural masonry, sprayed-on fireproofing and roofing. We are also providing additional technical services including floor moisture testing, ground penetrating radar to locate reinforcing steel in the existing structures, pull-out testing for anchor bolts set into the existing structures, and environmental services associated with underground storage tank removals.

Dublin Methodist Hospital, Dublin, Ohio

CTL Engineering is providing testing and observation services during the construction of a new multistory, 325,000 square foot building on 89 acres located in Dublin, Ohio. The building structure consisted of a structural steel frame supported by shallow spread foundations. CTL Engineering provided extensive soil, foundation, concrete, reinforcing, structural steel, fireproofing and masonry inspections.

Children’s Hospital – J West Addition and Livingston Ave Parking Garage, Columbus, Ohio

The J West Addition Project at Children’s Hospital includes a 71,000 square foot, 3-story structure. Whereas, the Livingston Ave Parking Garage Project includes a 7-story, 1,500 space car structure.

CTL Engineering provided geotechnical engineering services during the design phases of these projects. J West Addition was an in-fill within the hospital facilities. This required part of the building to be supported by the existing structure. To accommodate differential settlements bearing values were adjusted. Previous geotechnical investigations performed by CTL Engineering and other firms were complemented by additional borings. For the parking garage the site was investigated prior to design. This project was handled as a design-build project. Variable subsurface conditions due to the presence of former structures were encountered. A basement level with partial excavation and fill placement was recommended to remove unsuitable soils.

In addition, CTL Engineering is currently providing the construction testing and observation services for these two projects.
