Corporate Safety Committee

by Teresa Loury

At the beginning of the year, Jim Crowley, Corporate Safety Officer, assessed CTL Engineering’s EMR (Experience Modification Rate) and saw room for improvement. This EMR number is very important to CTL Engineering because not only does a low number help the company be more competitive, but it also gives company discounts on insurance and BWC premiums, which in turn means higher profit and increase in ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) value.

Accidents on the job are the #1 reason the EMR number increases. Therefore, to impact future CTL Engineering’s EMR status, Jim devised a plan to educate CTL Engineering’s employees on safety issues. He initiated an internal Corporate Safety Committee comprised of employees from various Branches and Departments. Charged with one goal, to provide awareness and proper training to employees about company safety, the Committee meets on a monthly basis to discuss safety issues and responsibilities.

The following employees are members
Jim Crowley – Corporate Safety Officer
Paul Motylinski – Cincinnati office
Matt DeRoche – Cleveland
Teresa Loury – Columbus
Richard Herrold – Columbus
Tim Browning – Minford
Randy Knapp – Wapakoneta
Steve Fenton – Durham
Dan Westphal – Indianapolis
Gary Bland – South Charleston
Jerry Oreste – Columbus (honorary member)
Rachel Shanteau – Columbus (honorary member)

So far the Committee has been working on changes to the safety manual regarding what types of equipment are mandatory and what types are voluntary. The Committee has also come up with the idea of new employee safety kits. These kits would be departmental/work related specific. The Committee will be presenting these changes and ideas in the upcoming July staff meeting.

In future meetings, the Committee will discuss the benefits a having safety-training courses similar to the drug-free workplace training courses CTL already has in place. They will also look at other sections of the safety manual for additional changes that may need to be addressed.

As stockowners, CTL Engineering employees need to be concerned with company safety. If any employees have concerns or recommendations, please let your Safety Committee member know and it will be addressed at future meetings
