GIS Services Now Available

by Jennifer Selfridge

Morgantown’s Environmental Services Department is pleased to inform their clients and sister-offices that the GIS team is up and running. They have installed ArcGIS, along with the needed software extensions, to plan, design, and implement the spatial or temporal data on nearly any project. Our GIS specialists can take your project data and map, manage, maintain and model data to respond more quickly to client requests, effectively comply with state and federal mandates, and better protect the community. The calculated development method is customized to each individual project. Our staff works with our clients to design and map all aspects of a municipality’s or company’s infrastructure, including street centerlines, address points, water and sewer systems, storm water, and electric and gas piping.

Although Morgantown uses GIS on a day-to-day basis on all of its department projects, a recent project recent project where GIS saved both time and money were Wake County (NC) Public School Board’s wetland delineation of an approximate 55 acre, heavily vegetated lot. Overlaying aerial photos, soil survey maps, hydrology, floodplain maps, and the proposed school design layout allowed the staff to focus their efforts on areas that were either highly likely to contain wetlands or areas to be impacted by site development. Data points were imported each night back in to the hotel and where the maps were updated. These updated maps allowed a revised plan to be developed for the next day’s field activities.

The Morgantown office is We are currently in the process of mapping the sewer system for Granville, WV. Town of Granville’s sewer system. The only maps currently available are paper-based and are approximately 25 years old. Tax maps are also being digitized. Manholes and piping will be surveyed in with a handheld, sub-meter GPS unit with ArcPad, which will allow location data to be immediately recorded and transmitted directly into the town’s database. In addition to coordinates of the data points, attribute data will be recorded on a custom input screen. Eventually, Granville will be able to track building permits, building inspection records, block and census block and tract summaries of housing and population, liquor licenses, garbage collection, crime incidents, public transit route volume, tax assessment records, and maintenance service orders.

Applying GIS to your projects will improve efficiency, increase productivity, and promote better decision.
